Undiscovered London, Butlers Wharf and Shad Thames
Bermondsey dates as far back as the Domesday Book. But by the mid-19th century, parts had become notorious slums and was immortalised in Charles Dickens's novel Oliver Twist. Lately it has been transformed into a thriving 'destination' in the heart of London.
This is the London of converted factories and disused old warehouses and ghostly scents of baking, jam and leather tanning – the industrial corsetry of the London Bridge Quarter. Yes, the wrong side of the tracks. But it’s the right side of the tracks because something’s happening here. The walk takes about two hours and ends at Lonodn Bridge and Underground Stations.
